Open Letter from NPC Texas Female Athlete Rep Jen Cook
To NPC Texas:
I have enjoyed seven years as an NPC Judge and ten years total in the NPC/IFBB organization. I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the people I have worked with in the wonderful organization of NPC Texas. When I was appointed Female Athlete Representative for Texas, it was very important to me that I pass on my knowledge and experiences to others to help them achieve their goals, both in and out of the bodybuilding world. You, the athletes and supporters, have never failed to inspire me with your determination, sacrifice, courage, and sportsmanship. As your Female Rep, you give me every reason to remain focused on providing strong leadership to strengthen bodybuilding as a sport and build a legacy for others to follow.
The 2008 NPC Texas State Championship in Houston, Texas, was an experience of a lifetime for me – both personally and professionally. Little did I know there were a few surprises in store for me during the night show! First, our Texas Chairman, Lee Thompson, recognized my judging skills by awarding me the “2008 Judge of The Year.” He then continued to say that he was “about to announce ground-breaking news” (as he put it) for the NPC organization. Mr. Thompson described a promotion that is highly honored and rare because only one other female judge in NPC history has attained this position: “Head Judge”. With that said, Mr. Thompson made the announcement of my promotion to Head Judge.
I was speechless!! All that I could say was, “WOW!!” Well, that isn’t exactly what I said, but I’m going to stick with that expression! I could not be any more grateful, honored, and proud to be NPC’s second female Head Judge!! THANK YOU!
However, the credit and recognition for my promotion should be dedicated to what I feel is the NPC family: the athletes, the supporters, the promoters, and the Texas judges and officers. Furthermore, much credit and admiration goes to my mentor who inspires me to be my best and who always puts NPC first: our dynamic leader – Texas President and Chairman, Lee Thompson. He continues to motivate us all (NPC and athletes) to excel. I am committed to maintaining the integrity of the organization and continue the legacy that he began.
A quick background:
I started competing in NPC Fitness in 1999, won my IFBB Pro card in 2002 (before Figure Division was introduced), and then became a Texas Judge in 2003. It was a great privilege to be both an IFBB competitor and NPC judge at the same time because few people have served in this dual role. Prior to my recent Head Judge promotion, Sandy Williamson was the only female Head Judge for NPC division. I can remember the first time I met Sandy in 2002: she was an icon to me because of her dedication and persistence in “getting the job done right.” Sandy continues to be an inspiration and model for me today. After hanging up my posing shoes (so to speak) as an IFBB Pro competitor last year, I was ready to step forward as a judge and demonstrate leadership, dedication, and class in NPC.
As I assume this unique responsibility as Head Judge, I pledge to represent the sport in general, and women in particular, with honor. I sincerely appreciate this opportunity to be a part of NPC and have the privilege of working with quality athletes, supporters, and officials. I encourage you to contact me with suggestions, questions, and comments at jen@jen-cook.com.
Thank you for the support! I wish you continued success and see you in 2009!
