We want to hear from you!
In the summer of 2007, Walton Arts Center launched a community survey that received more than 4000 responses. The survey asked questions about arts needs in our regions, and played a major role in shaping Phase 1 of the feasibility study report (Phase 1 report available here).
Once the study is complete, there will be many opportunities for dialogue and feedback in the community. In the meantime, please feel free to send us an email with your thoughts on future programming options by emailing feedback@waltonartscenter.org.
FAQ's
Is the arts center going to move?
No, the arts center is not going to move. The building is heavily utilized and we project it will continue to be very busy. New facilities would not replace the existing space, but complement it. The question being investigated is not about the current building itself, but rather about new facilities and how those new facilities would relate to and enhance what currently exists.
If you build a larger building, does that mean all the Broadway shows will move to the new theater?
Not necessarily. A new theater would allow us to put shows with very broad audiences into a larger space and support the show with greater ticket sales. It also gives us the ability to strategically use the venues to maximize the experience. Some of our Broadway Series shows would not play as well in a larger venue. Having two available theaters would give us the option to use both. Utilizing more than one venue - and different sized venues - is not uncommon for arts presenters across the country.
What locations are you considering for the new hall?
At this point, we are not even in the consideration phase. We are in the information-gathering phase. If we move forward with a building process, it will be a major project. In order to be able to successfully build and operate a theater like this, we must be extremely thorough in understanding all options and issues - looking primarily 15 - 30 years into the future. Therefore, we must have a very solid understanding of growth, development, interests and vision for the region as a whole. Regardless of where a new theater might be built, we must gather information about all possible options so our plans and decisions are well-informed as we launch a building campaign.
Why did the board decide to undertake the feasibility study?
The feasibility study is one of the final deliverables of a long-term strategic planning effort that the Center launched in 2002. The Cultural Development Action Plan was created by a team of regional arts, culture and business leaders, in conjunction with WAC board and staff, to move the organization forward over the next 5-7 years. A key focus of that plan was to elevate the level of programming presented at the arts center, grow our audiences, and ultimately begin planning for a new and larger hall.
What's happening with the Nadine Baum Studios?
Nadine Baum Studios remains an active part of our campus. It is being used heavily by two local arts organizations; TheatreSquared presents their season in the space and Northwest Arkansas Community Creative Center offers visual arts classes. In addition, we use the building for offices, meetings, receptions and special events and education programming. The feasibility study is considering the future of the Studios, as well.
