Europa Update

Incredible, absolutely incredible is the only word I can use to describe the past weekends event, the 13th annual Europa Super Show! Ed and Betty Pariso work hard for an entire year to put on the most incredible contest and expo I have attended this year, bar none. The event garnered 100 IFBB pro athletes and more than 130 NPC athletes and countless vendors.

As for the NPC contestants all were well prepared to compete. Figure provided the most contestants and some of the toughest competition as these ladies came to battler for a chance to move on to a national contest. It appeared that our judging critique message has been getting out as the ladies new pretty much exactly what we were looking for. I was excited to see 5 competitors in the fitness division, each of the ladies put on very delightful routines. They also dispelled the myth that gymnastics skills were not necessary to place high. Barbie Guerra a long time NPC Fitness competitor challenged those in attendance to take a shot a competing in a fitness competition in the near future. I too extend this challenge to each of you as it provides an alternative to figure and bodybuilding and is a route to an IFBB pro card. Bodybuilding was not to be outdone by figure and fitness. With Betty’s name in the title of the contest we had a great line-up of female competitors in three different weight classes. We also witnessed the return of NPC competitor Jodie Miller to bodybuilding. The men classes were also well stacked with well developed and conditioned physiques. The battle for the overall was extremely close between our heavy and super heavy weight competitors, but in the end the heavy weight took the night.

Our next contest is the Heart of Texas. You can bet Prince Harrison will put on a great contest, so please go out and support him and the NPC competitors on stage. Following the Heart we have the Gateway Classic in Laredo which is shaping up to be a great show. The John Sherman Classic will follow and is sure to be a big contest again as John has moved the contest the the Reliant Center. Don’t forget we will be hosting a figure/fitness symposium the morning after John’s contest at the contest hotel were you can find the resources you need to compete. Our final contest of the year will be the Lackland, where BIG RON COLEMAN will be guest posing.

I look forward to seeing each of you at a contest soon!

Summit Classic Update

My hat goes of to Summit Classic promoter Raul Bracamontes for hosting a spectacular event this past weekend  in McAllen.  As we were driving into the Valley we were listing to a local radio station and a 30 second advertisement for NPC Texas and the Summit Classic played.  It was pretty cool and it played every 3o minutes for 48 hours.  Upon arrival to the contest hotel NPC Texas and the Summit Classic made the front page of the McAllen Monitor.  Raul defiantly created a frenzy for body building in the Rio Grande Valley with this type of marketing.  Not only did he market the event well, he delivered with a star studded line up of athletes including Randy “The Natural” Couture, 5-time UFC World Champion, IFFB pro’s Gustavo Badell and Jennifer Becerra and 2006 Teen Nationals Champion LeeAnn Thompson.  Raul even treated the crowd to a rock concert during intermission with Warrior a local band who rocked the house and kept the crowd entertained.  But all that could not top the grand prize presented to the Open Class Overall Winner; round trip airfare, hotel, meals and VIP tickets to the Olympia in Las Vegas, NV.  Now that could people fired up.  We had folks in the crowd ready to get on stage for a piece of this action.

The season is heating up or at least the temperature in McAllen.  It was certainly a hot one.  Even the heat outdoors couldn’t match the heat that the competitors brought.  The teen, novice and open men’s classes were simply scorching.  From top to bottom this line up delivered true competition.  Competitors were thick, symmetrical and well conditioned.  I hope to see all of these folks in coming weeks at the Europa, Gateway Classic or the John Sherman.

Train hard and demonstrate sportsmanship always,

Central Texas Cup Update

Greetings All,

Another weekend and another great contest is in the books. The Central Texas Cup was held this past weekend end in Austin. The line of competitors was great. Congratulation to all. I want to give special congratulations to our female body builders. This may have been the best line up of females this year. Great job. I hope each of you will consider stepping on the stage again at the upcoming Europa Super Show in Arlington in just 3 weeks. It is a national qualifier and will give you an opportunity to show case your physique against the best our region has to offer.

I want to give special thanks and appreciation to IFBB Pro, Jay Cutler. This kind, friendly and compassionate pro graced our presence this weekend in Austin. To start the weekend off, Jay spent time at the weigh-in, meeting and greeting competitors and their family members. He then gave competitors and audience members a little pep talk and announced that he would be signing "free" autographed photos for all. Wow, the crowd was dumbfounded and overwhelmed with excitement. Jay stayed around for a while signing autographs and taking pictures with everyone. On Saturday, he worked the backstage scene pumping up competitors and offering words of encouragement. When he took to the stage at night he got the crowd fired up with his gargantuan size and athleticism. After a giving us all a brief update on his training and Olympia preparations, Jay gave the crowd more of what they were crying for...Big Jay posing down. After he left the stage the teens took to their routines. And, there came Big Jay on the stage posing down with a young and upcoming NPC competitor. This young man’s eyes got bigger than silver dollars and he smiled with great joy as he and Jay went at it pose for pose. It was a truly memorable occasion. Thank you Jay for being the man you are and representing body building with such class and honor. Good luck at the "O!"

The Summit Classic in McAllen, Texas is next on the agenda where we will see Gustavo Badell, Randy "The Natural" Couture, Jennifer Becerra and LeeAnn Thompson will be the guest posers for the evening. Be sure to check this contest August 19th.

The Europa Super Show is not to be missed. This is the only Pro/Am in Texas. The show offers two days of excitement with everything from body building, arm wresting, power lifting to a hot mom and model contest. Be sure to purchase tickets early as they are selling fast. The contest is August 25th and 26th in Arlington, TX. For more information go to www.europasupershow.com.

Until next time.

Train hard and demonstrate sportsmanship always,

Lee

USA Championships Update

NPC Members and Fans,

I just returned for the USA's in Las Vegas, NV. It was a great contest with many tremendous physiques from all over the country fighting for an IFBB Pro Card. Representing Texas were Jodi Miller, Desiree Masters, Marissa Ann Garza, Natosha Green, Shakelle O’Neal, Dawn Melanie, Tracie Redding, Kathleen Zamora, Kendra McAdams, Nancy Garcia, Karen Anderson, Stephanie McDonald, Susan-Marie Williams, Christine Moore, Melissa Hessel, Albert Diaz, Jeffrey Walden, Michael Smith, Anthony Delagarza, Odis McCullough, Jason Palafox, Tyrol Dillard, Rodney Fisher, Jason Moore, Melinda Williamson, Jennifer Sedia, Tina Chandler, Melissa Dettwiller, and Karen Choat. Congratulations to each of the competitors for working hard and representing out state.

Top 5 finishers from our state included; Albert Diaz (3), Melinda Wiliamson (2), Tina Chandler (1), Jennifer Sedia (2), and Karen Choat (5). These competitors deserve special recognition for efforts. If you see them or know them give them a big pat on the back as the competition was tough and they were stand-outs on the national stage.

I had the opportunity to speak with many of you at the competition. Thank you for your feedback on NPC Texas. As we discussed, we are working hard to bring many positive changes to NPC Texas in hopes that many of you will return to competition in our great state and others will make the leap from fan to competitor. Please do not hesitate to send me feedback at lee@npctexas.org as my purpose is to serve the NPC members and promoters of the state to the best of my ability and I will accomplish this with an open communication policy.

While I am at it let me attempt to give our figure competitors some feedback from the prospective of a national level judge. First, we are looking for an athletic, “natural” physique. Not too muscular, but skinny or stringy. There should be clear definition between the muscles but not deep cuts and certainly no striations. Glute/Hamstring tie-in should be noticeable and with high, firm glutes. A nice “Y” shaped back should be prominent with a small, tight waste line. Calves should be well developed and defined. Abdominals should be noticeable and defined. Hair, make-up, jewelry and suits should be well coordinated and highlight the competitors physique and color. Suit cut should also be taken into consideration, ensure that it is flattering of the physique and ensure that the one piece reveals not abdominal area.

I hope this give each of you some direction, keeping in mind that judges can only judge what is presented on stage if this criteria is not present, we must determine which physique gets us a close to this as possible. If you have any question, please e-mail me and I will do my very best to provide you with judging criteria feedback.

Remember our upcoming contest; The Summit Classic August 19th in McAllen, Texas and the Europa Supershow (Pro/Am) August 25/26th in Arlington. I hope to see you there!

Train hard and demonstrate sportsmanship always,

Lee
